Sumner Sambo promoted to Director News at Arise TV
NEWSMAN, Abuja – The Board of Directors of Arise News/ThisDay Media Group has announced Sumner Shagari Sambo as the new Director of News (Abuja) alongside other senior positions made available to journalists. Until his elevation, he was Political Editor at the news channel.
The announcement was contained in a company email signed by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Arise News/ThisDay Media Group, Prince Nduka Obaigbena who is also the Publisher/Chief Executive Officer of both platforms.
Reacting to his elevation in a social media post, Sambo commended the Board of Directors and management of Arise News for the confidence reposed in him while pledging to ensure the continued growth of the news channel.
“I thank my able Chairman, Prince Nduka Obaigbena and senior management for this trust and confidence in me. I also congratulate other colleagues of mine promoted in Arise News Channel and ThisDay Newspaper”, Sambo said.
“I seek your support in my new position to ensure that I continue to contribute to the growth and development of Arise News as Africa’s global voice originating from Nigeria”, the senior journalist concluded.
Sambo is a multi-skilled Journalist and multimedia professional. He is a 2018 Fellow of the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ). He also won the 2016 Nigeria Investigative Journalist of the Year (TV) award run by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) and was winner of the 2017 Senate Reporter of the Year (TV) award organized by the Senate Press Corps of Nigeria’s National Assembly.
Before joining Arise News, he was a Political Editor/Bureau Chief with News Central Television, a pan-African news channel broadcasting from Lagos, Nigeria. He was also a Senior Correspondent/Deputy Bureau Chief with TVC News, one of Nigeria’s largest TV networks which previously operated a pan-African news channel, TVC News Africa. Prior to that, he was a Broadcast Journalist with Reuters and a Senior National Correspondent with NN24 TV, Nigeria.
He also had a stint with The Nation Newspaper, one of Nigeria’s widely read and circulated national newspapers as a Production Sub-editor.
An MSc/BSc Mass Communication graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; he is a technology-savvy and probing mind who also acts as a Fixer for many international news crews coming to Nigeria or West Africa to source for interviews and news stories.
Sumner was the Media Coordinator of the 2011 NN24 Nigeria Presidential Debate. He has also won other awards like the Most Promising Youth, 2012 presented to him by the Chamber Social Club, Abuja.

Other Appointments at Arise News
The new promotions for ARISE News Channel include the new Deputy Managing Directors: Mr. Bayo Awosemo and Mr. Emmanuel Efeni; and the Managing Editor is Mr. Christian Ogodo.
The board also announced the appointment of Mr. Yemi Ajayi as Director of News (Lagos) and Mr. Joseph Ushigiale as the Director of Engagement & Guest Liaison while Tobi Soniyi is the Deputy Director of News (Abuja). Mr. Ohi Odiai is the Deputy Director of News (Lagos).
Ijeoma Nwogwugwu retained her position as Managing Director of Arise News.
Appointments at THISDAY Newspapers
Following the approval of the board, Shaka Momodu after a 7-year stint as the Editor of the Saturday and Sunday titles of the newspaper, was appointed as the Editor of THISDAY.
He succeeds Mr. Bolaji Adebiyi, who was promoted to the position of Managing Editor (Print and Digital). Mr. Israel Iwegbu was announced as the Deputy Managing Director, THISDAY.
By this promotion, Momodu becomes the first person, who started his journalism career with THISDAY as a rookie reporter, to rise through the ranks to emerge as the editor of the most influential newspaper in the country.
He is expected to enrich the editorial content of the newspaper for the benefit of the paper’s esteemed readers.
Also, the Deputy Editor of THISDAY, Mr. Davidson Iriekpen, has been appointed Editor of THISDAY, the Sunday Newspaper, while the Editor of the Saturday Newspaper, Mr. Yemi Adebowale was reappointed on same position by the board.
Similarly, Mr. Olawale Olaleye, who was the Deputy Editor of the Sunday Newspaper was promoted to the position of Deputy Editor of THISDAY, just as the Group Business Editor, Mr. Obinna Chima was also promoted to the position of the Deputy Editor of THISDAY.
In the same vein, Mr. Festus Akanbi, the Deputy Editor of the Saturday Newspaper has been promoted to the position of the Deputy Editor of the Sunday Newspaper; the News Editor, Mr. Alike Ejiofor, was also promoted to the position of Deputy Editor of the Sunday Newspaper, and Mr. Ahamefula Ogbu, has been promoted to the position of the Deputy Editor of the Saturday Newspaper.
The Capital Market Editor, Mr. Goddy Egene was also promoted to the position of Group News Editor, while the Maritime Editor, Mr. Eromosele Abiodun is the new Group Business Editor.
All the appointments take immediate effect.
