Senate confirms five INEC commissioners
NEWSMAN, Abuja – Senate has confirmed the appointment of five nominees as Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The Upper house confirmed Prof. Muhammad Sani Kallah, (Katsina), Prof. Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti), Saidu Ahmad (Jigawa), Dr Baba Bila (North-East) and Prof. Abdullahi Zuru (North-West), declining the confirmation of Lauretta Onochie, an aide of President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a statement by FIMC, CMC, Fsca, MBSC Special Assistant (Press) to the President of the Senate, Ezrel Tabiowo, disclosed that the confirmation of the nominees followed the adoption of the report of the Committee on the screening of the INEC nominees at plenary on Tuesday.
Accordingly, the Senate while confirming the five nominees, adopted the recommendations of the Committee by rejecting Onochie’s nomination and stepping down that of Professor Adam for further action.
It was reported that Onochie’s nomination was rejected by the Senate for reasons bordering on potential violation of the Federal Character Principle.
On the nomination against Prof. Sani Muhammad Adam, the committee recommended that his confirmation be stepped down pending further legislative action by the committee.
