Onazi ready for Super Eagles return

NEWSMAN, Abuja – Prolific footballer and Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi is hoping to get the chance to play for the three-time African champions.

“I was injured that’s why I wasn’t in the national team, I speak with the coach sometimes, and I also congratulated him on his new deal,” Onazi told Brila FM on Tuesday.

Onazi, 27, last featured for the West Africans in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against Seychelles in 2018, having only recovered from a long injury layoff.

“But you can’t be speaking to the coach all the time, because my job is to play and when I’m doing that pretty well, I’m sure I will be back in the team again”, said the former Lazio player who missed the 2019 AFCON finals due to the setback.

Onazi stated that he is in regular contact with Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr and hopes to feature more prominently for his club for a chance to earn a return to the national team.

Onazi has made 52 appearances for Nigeria and scored once.
