Obasanjo, Ooni of Ife Calls for scrap of BBNaija, urges youth to take over politics

NEWSMAN, Abuja – Nigeria’s Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has asked youths to forcefully flush out older generation from African leadership positions and take over the political sphere.

Obasanjo hinted this on Wednesday while delivering a keynote address at an interactive session organised by the Youth Development Centre, an arm of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta to mark 2020 International Youth Day annually celebrated on 12th August.

“Unless you squeeze out those who are in office and those who want to remain in office perpetually, some after the age of 80, unless you squeeze them out, they will not want to be out” Obasanjo said.

He added, “I believe we can all embark upon is to subscribe to the constitution of political parties in favour of youths. Or if you like it you call it affirmative action in favour of youths. For instance, if you say, in the constitution of a political party, not less than 50 per cent of those who hold executive office within the party will be less than 40 years.”

Meanwhile, The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, also celebrated the International Youth Day with youths from the Nigerian youth council in his palace at Ile Ife, Osun State.

The monarch advocated a replacement of the popular reality Television show, Big Brother Naija, stressing the need for participation of more youths in the Nation’s leadership.

“Nigerian youths are fond of accusing and abusing our leaders, stop abusing them, contribute your own quota. Let’s wear our thinking caps and begin to act like the real future leaders that we are.” The Ooni said.

He added that “in the last general election, the total number of votes cast was around 27 million while over 170 million people voted during the 2019 Big Brother Naija reality show. This is a practical reality of who Nigerian youth are and where our priorities lie as Nigerians”.

He urged leaders of the National Youth Council of Nigeria to work out plans on the show, which will be called, “The Big Nigeria Reality Show.”

“The proposed show will be structured in a way that young professionals, talented individuals and others across several field of endeavour will be showcased and helped to reach their peak” He said.
