Nigerians React to Force PRO Saying SARS operatives cannot be Scrapped.
NEWSMAN, Abuja – Nigeria’s Police Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, has insisted that operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) cannot be scrapped because of its deep involvement in the ongoing fight against banditry and terrorism in the northern parts of the country.
Speaking on Channels Television’s programme, Sunrise Daily, Mba said that the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu was committed to reforming SARS nationwide to curtail their excesses.
“We have received a lot of calls from people, particularly in states like Yobe, Maiduguri (Borno), Katsina and other parts of the north where SARS operatives are deeply embedded in the fight against banditry, and insurgency, and these people have made it very clear that ending SARS is not even an option for them because of the critical roles that SARS operatives are playing” Mba said.
He noted people have different motivations for calling for the end to SARS, and stressed on the fact that the operative has been invested heavily upon by the government, and will be hard to scrap out.
“If the #EndSARS should be seen and interpreted as the total disbandment of SARS, I will tell you very clearly that it will be difficult for any responsible organisation to walk that path taking into cognisance the amount of investment that the government has made in training and in setting up that department, taking into cognisance the critical role that department is playing,” he added.
Meanwhile, Nigerians have expressed their displeasure on the response given by the Force PRO on the #EndSARS movement.
However, the #EndSARS campaign on Thursday, witnessed a massive protest across states in Nigeria, with celebrities taking part in the protest and demanding for an end to SARS, and not just a ban on its operations, as the Inspector-General of Police, had ordered.
