Gas Explosion: Many injured, few feared dead in Lagos
NEWSMAN, Lagos – A gas explosion occurred at Iju Ishaga, Lagos State on Thursday afternoon, leaving Scores of people injured, some dead.
It was learnt that many vehicles were also burnt.
An eyewitness, Ikechukwu, said “We just heard a loud sound around 03.30 pm and we suddenly began to see smoke. The explosion is massive and we are not sure of the casualties, but many people are injured.”
Spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Agency, Nosa Okunbor, confirmed the incident, PUNCH reported.
“On arrival at the scene, it was observed that there was a gas explosion. Further investigation revealed that a truck had a lone accident and exploded. The impact of the explosion affected adjoining buildings and several vehicles were burnt”, he said.
Adding that, “Sixteen people were found to have serious injuries and were taken to various hospitals, including Iju water works Clinic. Two people out of the above 16 were referred to General Hospital. They are in critical condition. The other 14 people have been given adequate first aid treatment on the incident site.”
Okubor further revealed that an event centre and a plank market were also destroyed.
“It was confirmed that a 30 ton LPG Tanker being operated by Mana Gas Ltd was involved in an explosion which destroyed several vehicles, X and Y Event Center and a plank market in the above-mentioned axis,” he said.
