NEWSMAN, Lagos – #EndSARS Protests at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos on Tuesday night turned bloody as the Military while enforcing a curfew imposed in the state shot sporadically and killed an unverified number of persons, with many other protesters injured.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu had announced a 24-hour curfew, saying no one, except essential service providers and first responders, should be found on the streets by 4 pm on Tuesday.
But by 7-8pm, the protesters who defied the curfew had remained at the toll-gate demonstrating peacefully, holding the National Flags and even singing the National Anthem when the shooting began.
The protesters mainly young people have been agitated for two weeks now, demanding an end to Police brutality, reforming the Nigerian Police Force Completely and calling for good governance for the country at all levels.
The Killings which was seen as a “massacre” and “genocide”, Nigerians say, would not be forgotten and forgiven easily as Multiple photos and videos captured by citizens on Social media showed a very dark area as the toll gates lights were turned off and CCTV cameras at the toll gate removed before Soldiers began shooting live rounds indiscriminately all in efforts to disperse the protesters.
Governor Sanwo-Olu while reacting to the incident said “This is the toughest night of our lives as forces beyond our direct control have moved to make dark notes in our history, but we will face it and come out stronger. I’ve just concluded visits to hospitals with victims of this unfortunate shooting incident at Lekki”.
“There are currently 10 patients at the Gen Hospital, 11 at Reddington and 4 at Vedic; with mild to moderate levels of injuries while 2 are receiving intensive medical care. 3 patients have been discharged & we will continue to monitor and ensure all patients get the best care”, Sanwo-Olu added.
“As the Governor of our state, I recognize the buck stops at my table and I will work with the FG to get to the root of this unfortunate incident and stabilise all security operations to protect the lives of our residents”, He stated.
Meanwhile, angry youths have continued to rain curses on the Country’s Federal and State Government for failing to protect her citizens.
And the next morning, Wednesday 21st October 2020, the shooting continues.
