CNN, BBC coverage of #EndSARS protest disgusting — Buhari
NEWSMAN, Abuja – President Muhammadu Buhari has said he is disgusted with the coverage of EndSARS protests by foreign media, including the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and America’s Cable News Network (CNN).
Buhari, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, on Tuesday, December 8, said he was disgusted with the coverage, specifically by the BBC and the CNN.
CNN in a special report said soldiers shot at peaceful #Endsars protesters, at the Lekki toll gate on October, 20, 2020.
Although Nigerians government condemned the reports by CNN as fallacious and irresponsible, the investigation uncovered the bullets used as a 2015 brand from Serbia. This refuted the claims from the army denying the use of live ammunition.
Meanwhile, Buhari who specifically accused CNN and BBC of omitting the killing of police officers and attacks on police stations and prisons, said the coverage of the protests, by the foreign media was not balanced.
“I was disgusted by the coverage, which did not give attention to the policemen that were killed, the stations that were burnt, and prisons that were opened. (They said we are all at fault. We don’t have the sympathy of anyone. We are on our own),” he was quoted as saying by his spokesman, Garba Shehu.
President Buhari further warned that the government would no longer allow violent demonstrations in Nigeria, adding that “democracy does not mean confusion or lack of accountability.”
On the destruction of private and public property, Buhari said no responsible government would allow such to happen again, Premium Times reported.
“We do not stop anyone from demonstrating, but you don’t set up roadblocks and smash windscreens. Which government will allow that?’’
