Chelsea sign former PSG defender Thiago Silva
NEWSMAN – Former Paris Saint Germain captain Thiago Silva has agreed to an initial one-year contract with the Premier League club, with the option of extending the deal by a further season, after passing a medical on Thursday.
Silva, 35, captained PSG to the Champions League final last season, but the French side did not renew his contract. Hence, he was able to look for a new club as a free agent.
“I am so happy to be joining Chelsea. I am delighted to be a part of Frank Lampard’s exciting squad for next season and I’m here to challenge for honours,” Silva told Chelsea’s website.
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia expressed that they are “delighted to be able to add a player of Thiago Silva’s proven world-class credentials to our squad. Having performed at the highest level for many years, we have no doubt his experience and quality will complement the many exciting talents we already have here, and we hope he can add some new trophies to his impressive list of honours”.
The Ligue 1 club confirmed the 35-year-old’s exit on Thursday – despite last-ditch efforts by the Champions League runners-up to offer him a new deal, Sky reports.
Silva, who spent eight years with PSG after joining from AC Milan in 2012, is Frank Lampard’s sixth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr and Xavier Mbuyamba, PUNCH reported.
Silva won seven Ligue 1 titles during his time in France, but leaves the club having failed to achieve the European success desired most in Paris.
Chelsea is also expected to sign Bayer Leverkusen forward Kai Havertz shortly in a £90 million ($119 million) deal that would take their total spend in the summer window to a Premier League record £230 million.
Lampard’s new recruits could make their debuts in Chelsea’s Premier League opener at Brighton on September 14.
